Pike Perch
Pike Perch is a freshwater fish with an incredible delicate meat structure. Therefore, it is also highly appreciated all over Europe and sold as high priced seafood delicacy in top restaurants.
In nature, it mainly lives in lakes throughout Europe, the Nordic and Baltic countries, Russia and Kazakstan. Each year the catches of the wild Pike Perch are gradually reduced, the individuals become smaller, and in some lakes the species is gradually depleted.
During 2011, AquaPri has succeeded to farm more than 150 tons of large pike perch, including almost 1 million pike perch fingerlings (German: Setzlinge), partly used further growing at our own farms and for sales in other pike perch farms throughout Europe. As the only company worldwide, we are able to control the difficult process of multi-seasonal hatching, already now making us able to hatch and grow more than 1 million fingerlings per year.
We run two facilities in Denmark, one in a fully closed curcuit system in Egtved, close to Vejle in Denmark. This farm is primarily used for the production of fingerlings.
From May 2010, we have extended our farming capacity through a new facility in Ejsing, near Holstebro in Denmark, where we expect to produce up to 200 tons of large pike perch by 2012.
Farming pike perch is an extremely difficult science. Especially the farming of fry and juveniles proves difficult, partly due to the cannibalistic nature of the fish.
